Abaida Mahmood is a British Pakistani who was born and bred in the UK. After 12 years of her job as a secondary school teacher in London she decided to join her father in running his charitable trust in Lahore, Pakistan. The trust has four schools and one degree college for girls and caters for 5000 underprivileged pupils. The schools and college provide quality education to the poor at the lowest possible cost and all orphans and needy are educated free. Abaida moved back to London in 2014 and travels back and fourth to look after the trust.
Abaida holds a masters degree in English Literature and also a masters degree in School leadership and management along with a PGCE and TEFL from London. She is also the general secretary of Pakistan Education Watch (PEW) which is registered voluntary NGO aiming to bring a change in the field of Education.
She is a trustee of Qurban & Surraya Educational trust and her voluntary services are reaching beyond her institution. Her model of teacher training led Punjab University IER department to send their teacher trainees to her institution for training since 2006. She has conducted more than 100 workshops all over the world and has presented many papers nationally and internationally, most of them based on her research on women’s issues and education as an invited speaker. She also represented Pakistan at the Geneva IBE conference in September 2004. The books that she has developed for teachers are a great source of inspiration for all and have been appreciated by the ministry of education Punjab. In 2016 she formally launched QS training in London. QS training is dedicated to develop and teach individuals, groups & organizations, skills & competencies that are needed to enhance their personal & professional lives.The idea is to help people learn improve themselves and transfer those skills to other people. We train to grow and inspire learning.
She travels extensively in and out of UK and her work for pursuing education in the disaster struck areas in Pakistan has been commendable. Helping and educating the earth quake, flood and terrorism affected women has been her regular hobby which has transformed the lives of these women. She has also helped to micro-finance the work of some women.
She is well known and respected in her community, although not a politician, she is a visionary and an advocate for the vulnerable in her own and global society.
Having lived and experienced the Pakistani Muslim society at grassroot level she has experience of strengthening female leadership at primary level. Her work has empowered and engaged hundreds of girls to transform themselves from dependent women into contributing members of the family and society. Her background, understanding of Pakistani and English society and culture, passion for women’s education, links, and experience will help the educationists from diverse cultures to come together and create effective leadership opportunities for the young women and pave ways to future learning opportunities.
Her workshops, papers and speeches has inspired thousands of people all over the world. Her recent participation at the women inspiring women session at the WIN (women’s international networking) conference motivated many women from all parts of the world to pursue their leadership dreams.
