Steven Watts

Attitude determines altitude!

His message to the next generation is clear: get fit, stay fit and see the wonders of the Lake District. This message has inspired him to do so much.

Born and bred in inner city Manchester 1953, Steven has served her majesty in the Grenadier Guards - Tower of London - Buckingham Palace - Windsor castle & Northern Ireland/Canada. He became the youngest ever section commander at just 18 - having left the guards he worked in the power industry.

In 1979, having read a story about a Lakeland running legend named Joss Naylor, Steven was inspired to transform his life! After meeting Joss at his farm in Wastwater, Cumbria, he left Steven with some words of wisdom, “...lad, you need to stop smoking, lose some weight and start running!” The rest, as they say, is history.

With money raised through running, Steven has been able to raise in excess of £3 million which has helped to provide the first body scanner for children in the North West; a new orthodontic centre; an after burns care unit; and trips to Disney world, Florida for terminally ill children.

Steve is currently training for the ‘Everest Marathon’ in May 2016. He is raising funds for the further education of Sherpa children whose 16 fathers lost their lives during an avalanche on Mount Everest in April 2014. Steve had witnessed the events unfold and felt passionate about doing his part to make a difference.

On completion of the Everest marathon, Steve will become the first person in the world to have done so whilst having a pacemaker. He will also be one of the oldest at age 63. Money raised from the marathon will be shared between the British Heart Foundation and the Himalayan Trust UK.

Other achievements include: running from Land’s End to John O’Groats and running from Oldham to Blackpool (56 miles). In 1984 he completed The Bob Graham Round of 42 Lakeland peaks in under 24 hours and he has represented Great Britain as a fell runner in Switzerland.

Testimonials from Teachers

“Steve came into school at the beginning of the academic year to lead a whole school assembly to over two hundred and fifty children and at least twenty five staff members. It was truly inspirational and for over an hour you could have heard a pin drop as he held a captive audience. He evoked a sense of awe and wonder throughout and there was a sense of disappointment when the assembly came to an end. In my 4 years as Headteacher, I have never known the staff and the children to be so inspired and excited by a visitor.

– Debbie Greaves, Headteacher, Simmondley Primary School

"Steve lead a whole school assembly with over 400 children aged 5 to 11 years. The content of his presentation and his delivery ensured that the whole school was gripped. The assembly was well placed, well pitched and had time at the end for questions. The 40 minutes passed very quickly. The children were keen to talk about the assembly throughout the day. The Year 2 children were so inspired that they wanted to create their own running club. I would thoroughly recommend Steve."

– T J Kendrick, Didsbury Road Primary School

"Attitude not altitude... shows what you can do if you set your mind to it an inspiration for us all. Well done, Steve a truly inspiring story and an excellent presentation. one of the we have had.A truly inspirational speaker. A really remarkable presentation with really remarkable photography, we really felt as if we were toiling up that mountain in Nepal. Very poignant... I remember the Everest tragedy and it is good to know that the children are not forgotten. Thank you, Steve, for sharing your experiences with us and for you have done to raise funds for this and other children in need"
