Ross McGill is a qualified teacher who, across three decades, has worked in some of the most challenging schools in London as an assistant and deputy headteacher. Throughout his school leadership, he has been responsible for improving quality of teaching and learning and has a national profile as a leading contributor and organiser of professional development, research, and teacher wellbeing within a growing community of education professionals. As the most followed educator on social media in the U.K., he also offers unique social media insights and support for schools and organisations.

After 32 years of silence, he recently spoke out about male sexual abuse to encourage more men to speak out.

He is frequently asked to speak at national conferences and has worked with teachers all over the U.K. and in Canada, Spain, Switzerland, and the United Arab Emirates. He is regularly asked to reflect on educational developments in various publications about education policy and through his website, supports teachers worldwide. He is a PGCE tutor and visiting tutor at the University of Buckingham and when not completing action research on and offline, he is either teaching, reading, writing or tweeting!

Ross qualified as a teacher with a BAEd in Design Technology with Secondary Education (QTS) from Goldsmiths College, University of Arts London (93-97). He gained a masters degree in Design Studies from Central St. Martins College, University of Arts London(2006). He is a former SSAT Design Technology Lead Practitioner and was recognised by The Teaching Awards in 2004. He supports the charity work of Survivors UK; Education Support UK; Bliss Charity and Tommy’s Baby.

Ross McGill was recognised by Debrett’s in 2015 and features in People of Today, which recognises over 20,000 individuals who are positively influencing Britain and inspiring others through their achievements and leadership. McGill received a Teaching Award and was nominated for ‘Teacher of the Year in a Secondary School in London, 2004’. He was also listed as an ‘Education Reformer of the Year in 2014’ by The Education Foundation Think Tank. His site regularly reaches the number one spot in blogger awards for education.

He is currently a judge for The Teaching Awards, for the ‘Outstanding Use of Technology in Education’ category.

As an outcome to his blog, Bloomsbury Publishing asked McGill to write his first book, 100 Ideas – Outstanding Lessons, which has now sold over 20,000 copies and reached the top-100 of all books listed 3 months after publication on Amazon in 2013. His second book, Teacher Toolkit: helping you survive your first five years (September 2015) is very popular with new teachers and his third, Mark Plan Teach, published in September 2017 has now sold over 12,000 copies and has made Ross, Bloomsbury’s most successful education author, ever.

Ross has already started plans on his fourth book and four of his bloggers on his site now have their own book deals, publishing throughout 2018-19. He has written for Schools Week newspaper and for the Guardian Education.

Teacher Toolkit website is consistently ranked 25th in education across the world by Teach 100 and articles and resources exceed8 million views collectively. In 2014 to 2018, Vuelio awarded McGill with the ‘Best UK Education Blog‘ and in March 2016, DRUM shortlisted Teacher Toolkit for ‘Best Use of Social Media‘ by alongside BBC, ITV, Vogue Magazine and The Mirror. In 2017 Teacher Toolkit was also shortlisted for the U.K. Blog Awards in Education and in April 2018, won!

Ross also founded @SLTchat in 2012 which brings thousands of school leaders online to discuss issues and share ideas once a week. He also shared the famous #5MinPlan which has been downloaded over one million times in 170+ countries across the world. In 2013, he was one of first UK teachers to venture into the unknown with pay-per-download resources, challenging TES Resources copyright issues globally, before they did the same.
