Cy Edmondson

Cy Edmondson

I can! Believe in yourself, your dreams, that you are special and that you can!

In 1990, during a school leadership course. Cy fell ill with an unknown virus which attacked his spinal cord.

After 3 months in a coma, Cy regained consciousness, but had to learn to deal with the heavy burden of being disabled for the rest of his life. He had to re-learn to speak and had to come to terms that he will never walk again. During his stay in hospital, Cy developed a close relationship with his nurse, Wendy Lurie, and they married in 1994. They were informed that producing children would be a near miracle and probably not possible. Cy and Wendy's son Joshua was born in April 1995.

During November 2000, Cy's determination and courage was again portrayed when he took the challenge of "climbing" the Sentinel Peak in the Drakensburg, defying the "rules" of disability and making history.

Cy is described as a leader in the true sense of the word, a motivator, friend and counsellor - someone who always has the right intentions.

Testimonials from Teachers

"Cy Edmonson certainly provided our team with “another point of view” as a motivational speaker at our Sales Conference on 5 September 2006. He is by no doubt an extraordinary motivational speaker as he brings to the table many years of Corporate experience. The team found his talk inspirational and practical in that we could all relate to his experiences, as shared with us."

– Carmen Lawrence , HR Business Partner – Absa Corporate and Business Banking, KZN

"The UKZN Chapter of the Golden Key Honours Society was given the privilege of having Cy Edmondson as our special guest speaker on the night of our annual Induction Ceremony for 2006. Cy was the picture of relaxation and warmth, bringing all of the guests together with his witty and positive approach to motivational speaking. It did not take long before all those present were either rolling in hysterics or preparing to take on the world! Cy’s enthusiasm and inspirational story make it difficult for any onlooker to be unimpressed, and the society was approached by a number of guests after the ceremony and applauded for being associated with such a miraculous man! It is our honour to have Cy as one of our Honourary members and we wish him well with all of his future endeavours! Cy is truly a testament to what human beings are capable of if they are determined and pro-active!"

– Carla Penwarden, UKZN Chapter President 2006

"Cy Edmonson addressed the boys of Hilton College in the Hilton College Theatre. His humorous and deeply human and moving address was wonderfully well received and served to both inspire and entertain the audience. Cy's footage of his ascent of the Sentinel Peak in the Drakensberg was awesome and proved the limitless power of the human mind and body. His address was powerful without being emotional and he was able to capture the imagination and trust of the boy. I would highly recommend his talk in terms of allowing people a completely different perspective into how physically sound people can and should view and respond to those with physical impairments. This was a really uplifting, humorous and engaging talk by a vibrant, young and dynamic speaker and I have no hesitation in strongly recommending him."

– Ant Durnford (Deputy-director Academic Studies)
