VET OF ALL TRADES: Passionate about engagement, motivated by impact

Dr Victoria Strong qualified with distinction as a Veterinary Surgeon from the University of Liverpool in 2010, after having already been awarded a First Class BSc (Hons) in Veterinary Pathology from the Royal Veterinary College in London in 2008. After three years in mixed (farm and small animal) general veterinary practice she embarked upon a four year doctorate at the University of Nottingham and achieved her childhood ambition of becoming a 'monkey vet' at Twcross Zoo.

Here, she completed four years of specialist clinical training in zoological medicine and wrote her thesis "Getting to the heart of the matter" on the topic of great ape mortality and cardiovascular disease. Dr Strong's research has been published in scientific journals and received interest from zoological, veterinary and human medical professionals alike. Her work has received international recognition and she continues to carry out influential research in her role as a Lecturer in Animal Science and Veterinary Nursing at Nottingham Trent University.

From a personal perspective, Victoria is also someone who can demonstrate great resilience and instil hope and inspiration in her audience. During the course of her doctorate, she lost her sister, aged just 36, to bowel cancer. This terrible event gave Victoria a burdening sense of perspective on life, which she learnt not only to tolerate but to embrace. And so, as a little girl from a normal comprehensive school who naturally did well in everything but her sciences, Dr Strong is passionate about sharing her experience with others in the hope that they too can achieve their dreams and ambitions, even in the face of adversity. Her perspective on life and her professional journey to date is refreshing and has been an inspiration to many. As a Mum working in science, she is keen to encourage the next generation into careers which will benefit science and the natural world and is a great advocate for women in STEM.

Dr. Strong offers a variety of talks spanning topics such as her clinical and research experience to date, her personal journey and perspectives, comparative medicine and mental health. Whatever the topic, she enjoys sharing her knowledge and experiences that her diverse career to date has offered her. Her enthusiasm is infectious and her passion for her work evident in everything she does. This combination means that no matter what the topic, her talks are guaranteed to not only inform, but inspire and enthuse almost any audience.

Her speech gave the event a very positive feeling and everyone will have left with a renewed view of the future and their part in it."
