These presentations all have themes, such as the following:
Each presentation lasts between 30-45 minutes(or longer if required)and he describes the music about to be heard as well as relate amusing anecdotes about the composers featured. Naturally, there is a relevant educational value to all of his presentations. In several cases, Frederick has offered the sessions online, using Zoom or other suitable platforms.
He should also point out that in addition to sessions for Primary schools, Frederick has put together a number of presentations suitable for secondary school music students, including GCSE and A Level.
Frederick can offer a sample of what he can do by arranging a short preliminary Zoom meeting.
What is the purpose of his presentations?
To introduce young children to the wonders of classical music and demonstrate that you don't need to have great knowledge of this music to appreciate the images the various sounds conjure up. Let their imagination work overtime but they will be given some hints as to what to listen out for.
What is the long-term aim?
It would be hoped that the various musical programmes inspire pupils to discover other music by some of the composers themselves and help them to create illustrations, stories and even compositions of their own, using whatever musical resources are available. They can take 1 or 2 pieces as a starting point in order to create something new. Improvisation should also be part of this process.
Transition to High School
It always helps if pupils start high school with even a basic knowledge of famous classical pieces and how music sounds, as a foundation to work on. Never forget that several famous classical motifs/melodies are used as ring tones today, or feature in adverts, TV programmes and films. It should also help students identify styles and idioms, moods and colours, in preparation for further musical studies. What does an orchestra sound like, for example?
Frederick is able to create any suitable presentation upon request but his main target is to prove once and for all that is nothing to fear from classical music!
Presentations for GCSE and A Level Music
He can devise programmes that enhance the study of set works for both exam levels, especially the BBC Ten Pieces project but he can also create Ten Pieces of his own, using less familiar music but with an accessibility that will endear itself to students.
As an active composer for amateur and professional performers, he talks about his own approach to composition, illustrated with several examples. In addition, Frederick can create composition topics by using a step by step guide and weaning some pupils off the all too cliched 12-bar blues. Introducing them to the 12-tone system or composing using controlled dissonance is also a good way to develop their compositional prowess.
As a composer, he would also be willing to arrange or compose music for a specific ensemble of voices and/or instruments, where such music is not readily available. In other words, he would happily take commissions from various sources.
If required, Frederick would also be happy to create a short promo video to illustrate a chosen presentation from ones he has already created.
