Mariam's initial engagement in democratic participation began 6 years ago when she joined the Oldham Youth Council. Shortly after, she was elected a member of UK Youth Parliament and had the chance to debate and speak in the House of Commons. Since 2014, Mariam has been on the board of the British Youth Council as an elected trustee working to engage young people in decision making. Her passion for youth engagement has led her to work on numerous campaigns including votes at 16, league of young voters and youth unemployment.
More recently, Mariam's work involves representing young peoples views on various international platforms. She has spoken in European Parliament (EYE 2014 and 2016) and the Council of Europe (29th & 30th Session of Congress). She has also participated in a variety of global conferences (World Forum for Democracy 2014, Addressing Europe’s Unfinished Business 2016) in an effort to ensure young people’s views are on the political agenda, particularly those that are marginalised. Mariam has also been selected to partake in a youth diplomatic exchange with the British High Commission in Kuala Lumpur. Some of Mariam's previous work has been on holocaust education, human rights, promoting the UNCRC, women’s rights and minority rights.
In 2016, Mariam was invited to work with the Council of Europe on a toolkit to foster inter-religious and inter-cultural dialogue in local communities across Europe. The toolkit sets out recommendations for the 47 member states in an effort to integrate minority communities in Europe. Mariam has spoken to audiences of over 300 decision makers from across the Council of Europe's member states to share her experience as a young Muslim immigrant in Europe. In addition, she has spoken on the UK Government’s ‘Prevent’ agenda and radicalisation at a local level.
Mariam advocates for the inclusion of young people in shaping policy around radicalisation and the prevention of extremism. This year Mariam spoke at the Council of Europe’s Conference on the Future Citizenship and Human Rights Education in Europe. She was invited to contribute to the topic ‘Students or suspects? – How to ensure respect of human rights while addressing violent radicalisation?’.
Mariam is currently a student at Newcastle University studying European Politics with Spanish.
"In my role as Director of Liverpool Schools’ Parliament and Liverpool Lead for UK Youth Parliament I have known Mariam since January 2013. During that time I have heard Mariam give several public speeches to general acclaim. As a Trustee of European Youth Parliament UK I had the pleasure of hearing her speak at the Opening Ceremonies of EYPUK National events at Liverpool Hope University in both September 2015 and September 2016"– Jeff Dunn, Director, Liverpool Schools’ Parliament
"Mariam is an ex pupil of Hathershaw College and has been called upon on several occasions to come back to speak to our students, staff and parents. We do this because Mariam has such an inspirational story of success to tell. When we work with Mariam it is a dream, she takes great care to make sure she knows what the message is she is getting across and tailors it to her audience. Mariam is superbly professional and slick in her delivery but manages to be real and empathise with her audience"– Miss Lorna Philip, Assistant Principal, The Hathershaw College
"Mariam is an ex-student of Oldham Sixth Form College who, over a number of years, has come back into college to speak to existing and prospective students (and their parents). We have invited Mariam in regularly as she is, quite simply, inspirational. The manner in which she approached her studies, alongside her hugely impressive involvement in local, national and international youth politics, is fascinating for students to hear about and can only serve as motivation for their own aspirations.
Practically, Mariam is a pleasure to work with. She's entirely reliable and will tailor her talks to audiences as directed. Equally, she is experienced enough to be able to deal professionally with last minute changes. She is always well-prepared and talks passionately about her life-choices and how other young people can reach their personal goals. Mariam is a fantastic ambassador not just for the college, but for education in general. I can not recommend her highly enough."– Dr Richard Lee, Associate Director, Oldham Sixth Form College
