Carla Cotterell

Playing the money game - how one girl threw the dice and won!

Carla Cotterell is an energetic executive with 18 years experience leading sales and marketing operations for technology start-ups and media giants such as Time Warner. She gets a thrill from financial achievement and has created a very comfortable standard of living by building multiple income streams through clear goal-setting, smart decision-making and a thirst for knowledge.

Carla was born to a white English mother and a black Jamaican father who failed to create a harmonious home life and struggled to build their economic wealth. When she was 13, her pregnant mum and four children fled the family home and spent five months living in a single bedroom in a Women's Aid Refuge. Despite the family upheaval, Carla went on to gain her GCSE's and A Levels and was the first member of her family to go to university.

During her BA (Hons) in Business Studies, she spent 18 months working for Hampshire County Cricket Club where she raised £8 million in National Lottery, Sports Council and Member donations for the creation of the new Rose Bowl Stadium. After earning her degree, she won her first role at an internet start-up and then studied part-time for her Post-Graduate Diploma in Marketing. She soon discovered that the highest salaries were in sales and swapped disciplines. She has been propelled through the ranks in both high growth start-ups and large corporates because of her ability to deliver results.

At university, Carla set herself the goal of earning £30k by the time she was 30 and she exceed this by £12k when she was 25. She earned her first £100k salary when she was 30.

Carla bought her first house when she was 24 and sold this for £104k profit four years later. She is an Accredited Landlord in London, a Licensed Landlord in Kent and her property portfolio is valued in excess of £1.5 million.

Carla refused to accept the economic status of her parents and is proof that anyone, regardless of age, gender, ethnicity or social status can deliver exceptional results. Her winning attitude and open approach to attracting wealth are infectious. She is passionate about playing the money game and is keen to share her interpretation of the core behaviours needed for young people to be successful in the corporate world.

"I had the pleasure of listening to her at my school South Hampstead High School on the 17th January 2015. She came to my school to talk about her life and how and why she became who she is and the points she learnt on her journey. I found her talk to be inspiring and useful and I hope many other schools are able to listen to her as well,as I feel she has a lot of points that other students could benefit from."Adaobi Nezianya, South Hampstead High School
