Anna Golawski

Improving performance through mental toughness

Anna Golawski is a highly effective, post-graduate qualified coach and facilitator who works predominantly with headteachers, senior leadership teams and managers in both the education and business private sectors. Anna is particularly interested in helping leaders and their staff to better manage stress and performance in the workplace. She is a published author on the topic of Mental Toughness/Resilience and has written several coaching articles for magazines. She is regularly consulted for comment by the Institute of Leadership and Management (ILM).

Anna is able to offer various services to schools, including one-to-one leadership coaching, workshops, INSET days, CPD training, in respect of resilience and mental toughness, and advice around wellbeing, mental health and performance.

Here are some of the session topics she typically covers:

UNDERSTANDING MENTAL HEALTH

These shorter sessions are aimed at all staff and are the essential foundation for other work, the main objectives are to:

  • enable participants to understand why mental health and wellbeing is relevant to us all and fundamental to how we perform at work
  • empower and enable participants to understand and notice how they and others may appear in the workplace
  • provide the language around, dispel the myths about, and reduce the stigma surrounding mental illness
  • provide ways to promote positive wellbeing and avoid unhelpful thinking
  • enable participants to recognise the warning signs of deteriorating mental health
  • signpost participants to appropriate help, internally and externally

MANAGING FOR SUCCESS

The sessions are aimed primarily at leaders who need to have effective and respectful conversations around mental health and wellbeing. Sessions build on the foundations laid down in the Understanding programme. The objectives are to:

  • reinforce learning from our Understanding sessions and consider their practical application with respect to participants’ responsibility for, and relationships with, other people
  • challenge assumptions and prejudices around mental illness
  • improve communication skills and instil the confidence and competence to converse with people about mental health issues
  • enable participants to understand and balance competing workplace demands and responsibilities
  • develop and practice key skills around appropriate listening and questioning.

A FOCUS ON STRESS

Stress, pressure and anxiety can have a profound effect on individuals and teams in the workplace - impacting morale, health, productivity and performance. If left unaddressed stress can lead to more serious mental illness.

With that in mind, this module has been designed for all staff as an alternative to the broader content of Understanding. Sessions follow the same overall objectives as our Understanding programme but focus exclusively on issues surrounding stress.

Testimonials from Teachers

"Anna led a coaching session with the teachers in school. The feedback was overwhelmingly positive – teachers found the interactive nature of the session engaging and fun! It was very helpful to have time set aside to rethink what individual personal goals we had that could then be broken down into manageable tasks. Anna immediately invokes a feeling of trust and that in itself is very useful when asking teachers to potentially reveal areas that are problematic to them or their practice. I can highly recommend Anna and will be also using her services further for one to one coaching: it is useful to have someone from the business world who can help us reflect as teachers on how certain areas can be improved that are not specifically related in terms of teaching."
